Drugs are substances used to treat an illness, relieve a symptom, or modify a chemical process in the body for a specific purpose. DRUG addiction and substance abuse in Nigeria has become an epidemic, especially among the youth.

By far the most commonly abused and misused drugs in Nigeria today are Tramadol, Codeine and Indian hemp(IGBO). Tramadol is a synthetic opioid analgesic used to treat moderate and severe pains. In prescribed doses it has no negative effects on the respiratory system but an overdose causes arrhythmias, cramps, coma and eventually death. In Nigeria, tramadol is mostly abused by labourers, sex dealers, thugs, touts, students etc.

Codeine is commonly prescribed as a painkiller because it is relatively mild when compared with many other opioid painkillers. It is nevertheless dangerous and habit-inducing. Prolonged and frequent codeine abuse can lead to mal-adaptive behaviours and health problems, including death.

Indian hemp is also a harmful drug used by most youths today all in the sake of getting high. Most students in most universities get introduced to this hard drug normally by their peer group just to feel among.

Most people smoke, eat or drink Indian hemp to forget their sorrow, forgetting that after the so called highness your problems are watching and staring you in the face to get high again. Continuous use of Indian hemp normally result to brain damage, madness and death. Once addicted, the victim can go any length just to get some weeds in his pocket.
